Spiced Balkan Chicken

Ingredients

  • 4 skinless chicken thighs, or more to taste
  • ½ lemon, cut into wedges
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, coarsely chopped
  • 2 large cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup dry white wine
  • 1 (14 ounce) can chopped tomatoes in juice
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 pinch white sugar
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Rub chicken pieces with lemon. Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven or lidded skillet. Add onion and garlic; cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add chicken pieces and cook until browned on all sides, 5 to 10 minutes.

  2. Pour wine over the chicken. Add tomatoes with their juice, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, sugar, salt, and pepper; bring to a boil. Cover the Dutch oven and simmer until chicken is tender, 45 minutes to 1 hour.
