What is Halloween, why do we take it and celebrate it more and more?
Halloween – a holiday of unclean forces, which our loved ones and youngest celebrate on the night before November 1st. But in order to understand the essence of this mindless celebration, we must touch its roots. The holiday has its roots in the pre-Christian era, among the primitive Celtic pagans in the regions of England, Ireland and Northern France. The Celts believed in the birth of life after death. The beginning of the “new” year, of the new life in general, they marked the night before November 1, when the transition from the light to the dark period took place. Then they glorified the god Samahin who, according to them, was the master of death. It was believed that on that night the souls of the dead, dwelling in a world of darkness, cold, and death, visited the homes of the earth, presenting themselves to the living with insatiable hunger. And if the souls of the dead were not merciful with the offerings, then the wrath of the god Samahin would be poured out on the living. Hence the rooting of the custom in the pagan world, and in the modern world to walk around wandering during Halloween dressed in costumes of devils, witches and the like, to represent the communion of the living world with the afterlife and unclean forces. Later, a pumpkin head lamp appears as an attribute of the holiday, with which children dressed in white frighten adults, who in turn redeem themselves with their gifts.
